Community Wellbeing Service Client

I want to tell people that there is help out there. Sometimes it’s hard to find and hard to do it yourself. I would recommend this service because, for me, it’s helped. It feels like someone cares.

I was in a bad way, cos I’m new to the area and didn’t know anyone down here. I was feeling down and depressed and I wasn’t eating on a regular basis. I have learning disabilities. So I went to the GP and that’s when they sent me to Southdown.

I was a bit confused, dubious, and nervous at first. It wasn’t easy to chat to him, but since we’ve met more regularly it’s easier. You pick up a bond with that person. They’re doing their job and you’re there to get help.

I felt better talking to a stranger than family or friends. It’s because they have a different viewpoint and know how they can help you.

The service provides sessions where I meet with my Advisor in a café, office, or we travel together to an arranged activity or event. Each session varies. We talk about goals and achievements, updates on life in general. If I didn’t have that, nothing would change.

An important goal for me is socialising with other people and making new friends. It has improved my life. The key thing is to have a connection with those people. It feels good, knowing I can speak with others. But also knowing how to deal with issues as they arise.

The Community Connectors Service provides Social Prescribing to support people with mental health challenges. The Social Prescribing model links patients with non-clinical specialist services in the community to enable them to get practical help in many different areas, including advice with housing and benefits, and to connect them with social activities to help improve their wellbeing.
