"If I didn’t have this support, I probably wouldn’t be in this world"

Housing Client

I first got support from Southdown 17 or 18 years ago. I’m a Southdown tenant living in a council flat. This means that Southdown manage the lease and provide me with support from Housing Management and the Tenancy Sustainment Service.

I’ve been having help for hoarding for over a year now.

We were living on top of each other. Every part of my flat was covered in collectibles and memorabilia. I couldn’t access the kitchen or bathroom. It’s not very nice – we had to be careful where we walked and had to strip wash on the bed.

The council couldn’t access the property and once the ambulance crew couldn’t enter to help my partner.

Now things are improving and it’s looking better and I am a lot happier now. A hoarding specialist has been coming to see us. They empty a room at a time and then help us decide whether to keep things or put them in the box for things to be taken away. We just have the bedroom and living room to clear now.

If I didn’t have this support, I probably wouldn’t be in this world.

I was diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia with split personality disorder when I was 20 - I’m now 52. I had a 20 year drug habit but I’ve been clean for four years.

I’ve got medication but I do have my moments when things get on top of me. I’ve been my partner’s full-time carer for 13 years. My partner is my priority and she was my main motivation for getting clean. I’m lucky to have her.

I’ve had psychiatric help for my mental health, but I also struggle with bills and financial management and I’ve been hoarding for ten years. I’m quite an independent person, but sometimes I can’t do things. And my memory isn’t very good. I forget a lot of appointments.

My Tenancy Sustainment Officer has helped me get the funds for a new washing machine dryer. She also wrote a letter on my behalf to get an unpaid parking ticket written off.

She’s done me well. She’s been there for me and shown me a lot of support.

Southdown provides different types of affordable housing from temporary accommodation to a long-term home for people who have health and/or support needs. As a specialist supported housing landlord the majority of our tenants also receive additional support from our housing officers to help maintain their homes. Alongside them, our floating support officers work to ensure that individuals have the support they need to manage their independence, health and wellbeing.
