“Things got a lot better when I moved here because it’s such a nice place.
I enjoy having my own flat. I’ve lived here for 13 years now. I like it because it’s a nice quiet place. I look after my flat – it’s lovely and tidy. I clean it myself.
I like the Support Workers because they’re very helpful. The staff come and help me with my cooking sometimes - they help me make dinner. They help me with my shopping on a Monday - I go to a supermarket just down the road. They help me with paying for things.
I like football quite a lot. I go and watch Wimbledon play in London. One of my Support Workers comes with me. I go to every home game.
I’ve been playing the electric guitar since I was a boy. I like playing the guitar because they sound lovely when they’re played properly. I really like playing Atlantis – it’s a really relaxing and calming song. Hank Marvin is my favourite musician – I really like him.
I go to Fright Fest every August in Leicester Square to see horror films. That’s my favourite type of film. I started getting into them when I was 18 and I watch them here.
I do the Courier Run every Friday for Southdown. I help take post to different learning disability services. I’ve been doing that for nearly nine years. I like it because it’s such a nice job – I really enjoy it. I like seeing people.”
Southdown manages supported living services across Sussex. Supported living is where an individual owns or rents their own home and has control over the support they get and how they live their lives. Accommodation and support is provided separately. It can be very different for different people. For one person, supported living might be a few hours of support a week to enable them to live independently by themselves in a rented flat. For another it may be around the clock support in a shared house or self-contained flat.
