"Music is relaxing. It makes people's moods better. The music helps mental health"

Facilitator at Preston Park Recovery Centre

On a horrible wet day last week I had six people come in dripping wet. But they all came out happy.

I’ve been doing it for a long time, must be about 15 years. It’s called Classical Music Appreciation.

Music is relaxing. It makes people’s moods better. The music helps mental health.

They all come in, I say what the music is going to be and give them the notes to read. I put the music on and everyone sits and listens.

I like to be interested in all forms of classical music so I can be as varied as possible.

I think some regulars come along for sheer enjoyment. I know I enjoy it.

During the Winter I take them to concerts in London. Sometimes we go to the pubs afterwards.

Music has given me relaxation, it does help my mood. It all depends on the piece of music. It can lift your spirits or make you depressed.

Preston Park Recovery Centre provides a welcoming and supportive environment in which people with mental health support needs can receive individual support, learn new skills and get involved in a variety of groups and activities such as classical musical appreciation. The Centre also provides access to our specialist employment service, a welfare benefits service and can refer onto other services such as housing and health.
