"Places like this are so so important. I’ve never come across anywhere else like here, it’s really special.”

Recovery Worker

I want people to know that it’s really important to talk about mental health; to reach out for support if you need it; and that everyone has mental health that needs nurturing and taking care of.

“When I talk to my friends about Preston Park Recovery Centre, I tell them it’s a beautiful Victorian building that feels more like a home. I tell them that we have a beautiful garden and that we’re opposite the park so you can see the seasons passing and hear the birds singing.

I’m a Recovery Worker. I meet with clients to give them general support to meet their individual personal goals. All of the clients here have mental health challenges.

It’s a really welcoming place where you can try new things in a non-judgemental space.

We’re open every day. The range of things we have on offer here is great, like yoga, art, and acupuncture. We have good value, brilliant hot meals. Staff look out for clients, they check in, they call them if they haven’t been seen. It feels really caring.

We’re very lucky to work here – it has a special feeling about it. I have the lovely opportunity to connect with people every day and I just love that.

I’ve recently started a young person’s group at the centre for 18 to 35 year olds. I feel really proud of this group. It’s only in its early stages, but it feels very exciting and there’s been some really great feedback so far.

It will be held once every fortnight and it’s an opportunity for young people to try different activities each session. We recently had a mocktail party accompanied by tropical music and free food given to us from a Mexican restaurant. It was lovely and felt really positive and summery! Everyone left with a smile on their face!

We want the group to be as client-led as possible – for clients to come up with ideas and make them happen, to try different things in a safe space. In the past young people weren’t really accessing the centre and so it was identified that it would be good to have a specific group for young people to meet their peers.

I learn so much from the clients I see. After every session I am very inspired. People are very strong and resilient.

I want people to know that it’s really important to talk about mental health; to reach out for support if you need it; and that everyone has mental health that needs nurturing and taking care of.

The stigma is reducing but it’s still there. I see a lot of people who self-stigmatise. Shame can be such a big thing.

Places like this are so so important. I’ve never come across anywhere else like here, it’s really special.”

Preston Park Recovery Centre provides a welcoming and supportive environment in which people with mental health support needs can receive individual support, learn new skills and get involved in a variety of groups and activities. The Centre also provides access to our specialist employment service, a welfare benefits service and can refer onto other services such as housing and health.
