Community Roots offers a 'central access point' to a network of 16 local community-based services working together to support good mental health and wellbeing in Brighton and Hove.

One of our key aims is to ensure that no matter where people enter the mental health system, they can easily gain access to services that meet their needs.

Who are we?

Southdown, is the ‘lead provider’ for Community Roots, which is funded by NHS Brighton and Hove CCG and Brighton and Hove City Council. The 15 local organisations that make up and provide services as part of Community Roots, including Southdown are:

As well as working with one another, Southdown and Community Roots’ organisations work with partners in the mental health and wider health and care systems (both clinical and other non-clinical services). Through collaborative working, we aim to ensure people access the most appropriate support, extend the pathways of mental health & wellbeing support and remove barriers to access.

About Our Services

Based on the recovery model for mental health, our services have a holistic, person-centered approach to mental health care that focuses on the person, not just their symptoms.

The concept of recovery is about people staying in control of their life despite their mental health challenges. Our services include prevention, wellbeing and recovery support for people with a range of mental health challenges. Support for carers and families is available too.

Community Engagement Service

The Community Engagement Service works in close partnership with Primary and Secondary Clinical Services and other key providers in Brighton and Hove to ensure integrated pathways for people accessing support, in particular for those who are facing complex situations.

Our Community Engagement Workers support people with severe mental health challenges and complex lives. They also signpost for individuals struggling with substance misuse or for those involved with the Criminal Justice system whose risk or re-offending is connected to their mental health.

The service is provided by Southdown, with specialist part-time workers based in the Trust for Developing Communities (TDC), Friends, Families and Travellers (FFT), MindOut, Brighton Women’s Centre (BWC) and Assert.

Community Engagement Workers will work closely with you on a one-to-one basis to help:

  • Reduce barriers to accessing services
  • Engagement with services
  • Stabilise your situation and de-escalate and manage any mental health crisis
