We are looking for a new Chair of the Board

Posted on 19 January 2026

Southdown is recruiting for a new Chair of the Board to lead us through an exciting next phase.

For over 50 years, we’ve been supporting people across Sussex to live safe, well and independent lives. Today, we help more than 11,700 people each year through our housing, mental health, care, homelessness prevention and employment services.

Following the launch of our co-produced Strategy 2025-2030, we’re now focused on delivery, impact and long-term sustainability. We need a Chair who can help guide us on this journey.

About the role

As Chair, you’ll work closely with our Chief Executive and Board to provide strong governance and strategic oversight. You’ll support and challenge our leadership team, champion our values, and represent Southdown to partners and stakeholders.

This is a high-influence, non-executive role suited to someone comfortable leading in complexity and balancing ambition with realism.

The role comes with a remuneration of £11,750.

Who we’re looking for

We’re looking for someone who shares our deep commitment to social purpose, inclusion and co-production. You’ll have experience of chairing, leading or governing complex organisations, and bring sound judgement, strategic thinking and collaborative leadership.

Experience of working alongside people with lived experience, and an understanding of systems such as housing, health, care or the voluntary sector, is highly valued.

Time commitment

The role involves quarterly Board meetings in person at our head office in Lewes, committee involvement, regular contact with the Chief Executive, and two annual in-person Board away days.

Why this role matters

This is an opportunity to make a meaningful difference at scale, helping shape services that support some of the most marginalised people in our communities, while leading an organisation known for compassion, quality and ambition.
