Southdown Summer Fiesta celebrates the power of social connection

Hundreds of people came together last week as Southdown’s annual Summer Fiesta was held at Plumpton Racecourse, celebrating the importance of community, friendship, and social connection.

The event brought together people supported by Southdown’s learning disability services, alongside families, staff, Board members, commissioners, and volunteers.

The afternoon was filled with music, entertainment, and activities. It gave people the chance to connect, have fun, and make new friends. From a magician and an Ancient Greek-themed puppet performance to a DJ, disco, football challenge, craft stalls run by people Southdown supports and a dedicated Chit Chat Corner, there was something for everyone.

Beyond the entertainment, the day highlighted something even more important – the positive impact that meaningful social connections have on wellbeing. Research consistently shows that strong social relationships can improve both mental and physical health, reduce loneliness and help people feel part of their community.

Simon, who attended the event, said: “I like the whole thing because I like being here. I like to get to meet people.”

This year’s Fiesta was shaped by people supported by Southdown, including Steve. He said: “It was the best one ever! Everything’s been fun! There were a lot of people here. I met a few people at the Chit Chat Corner where you get to meet people and swap information about what you like. It’s a way to make new friends.”

Jonathan Senker, who will become Southdown’s new Chair of the Board in September, attended his first Summer Fiesta and reflected on what stood out to him. “It’s really fabulous to have the chance to meet everyone. The creativity on display and seeing people come together to be part of something so enjoyable has been brilliant. It was great to hear how involved people who use Southdown’s services have been in planning the Fiesta.

Anita Beverton, Southdown’s Head of Learning Disability Services added: “Thank you to everyone who attended, volunteered, performed, ran stalls and helped organise the event. From months of planning to the celebrations on the day, the Summer Fiesta showed what is possible when communities come together to celebrate connection, inclusion, and friendship.”
