Unemployment can have a major impact on mental wellbeing and physical health. It can cause depression, anxiety, stress and low self-esteem. Finding or returning to work can reverse the adverse health effects of unemployment as well as help to escape poverty.

If you are unemployed and have mental health challenges, we can help you overcome barriers that are preventing you from accessing work and secure or retain employment that suits your needs.

We provide a range of services that provide support through an approach called Individual Placement and Support (IPS), recognised as best practice by the Centre for Mental Health.

To ensure our support is joined-up, we work in partnership with the Sussex Partnership NHS Foundation Trust’s mental health clinical teams. We also work with local Job Centres and employers to increase opportunities for people with mental health challenges to secure and retain employment.

All our services are free and available for people aged 18 and over (some can also be accessed by young people aged 16 and over). Please note: eligibility and access to our services varies depending on how support has been commissioned. More information is available in the sections below.

Covid-19 statement (28th March 2022)

Now that the Government has lifted Plan B measures and we move out of the pandemic, the Government is encouraging people ‘to learn to live with Covid-19’ and manage the risk to ourselves and others. At Southdown, we’re continuing to follow Government guidance to reduce the risk of infection and transmission across our workplaces and services.

Our services are continuing to offer in-person support and are meeting with clients outside and inside Covid-safe venues (whichever is the most appropriate for client support). We are also continuing to offer phone or online support where this is appropriate. We have local arrangements in place to make sure we manage this ‘learning to live with Covid-19’ stage.

If you have any questions regarding our safety protocols for staff and clients, please contact us using the details on the relevant service page.
